Natalie Venner

Art and Psychology

I am a contemporary painter exploring the impact of social media on women’s self-esteem and identity in our digitally saturated world. With a background in both Fine Art and Psychology, my work is deeply informed by my desire to understand how platforms like Instagram and TikTok affect the way we perceive ourselves and relate to others, particularly young people and women, who are often the most affected.

Inspired by the narrative-driven figuration and expressive intensity found in the work of Nicole Eisenman and Salman Toor, I use saturated colours, gestural brushstrokes, and chaotic compositions to capture the emotional turbulence of our online reality. My aim is to recreate the overwhelming, fast-paced experience of digital consumption, an environment where images, identities, and expectations constantly collide.

Each painting begins with a sketch collage made from an amalgamation of photos and sourced digital imagery, which I use to construct scenes that feel both familiar and disorienting. Building these compositions through layers of acrylic and oil allowing texture and movement to echo the fragmented, overstimulating nature of our virtual lives.
