My current practice is about being in tune with memory and creating tactile recreations of personal spaces that I have had childhood experiences in. I am currently working with cardboard to mirror the fragmented and imperfect nature of memories. Moreover, my creations of home spaces are not supposed to be direct replicas and instead a visual representation of the scattering of our own reminiscence.

The artists that I have been inspired by this year are Thomas Demand and Rachel Whiteread. I have been particularly drawn to how they use cardboard and everyday materials to create sculptural pieces about the tension between what looks ‘real’ and emotionally truthful. Their work has pushed me into playing around with realism and emotional distance in my work and using simple materials to recreate reconstructed spaces that carry emotional weight without needing a detailed explanation.

My work has also been inspired by my current personal experience of moving house into a completely new and empty space and the feelings it brings up. My use of cardboard is to also mirror the cardboard moving boxes that will soon be packed up with my family’s belongings and moved into an unfamiliar space.

My work in the degree exhibits an installation recreation of my current living room, including life size furniture, intricate details including tv remotes and ornaments and even a dollhouse version of the space. The intent behind this installation is to invite slow discovery and reflection of how memory unfolds over multiple layers.
