Through quiet biblical imagery and spurred by Genesis 3:19, the overarching theme of my work came together: God did not create us to last. There will come a time during which we as humans will be a thing of the past. I use inherently human imagery – bones, hands – as well as specific fruits mentioned in the Bible – figs, apples, pomegranates. Each drawing is meticulously done on a canvas using a 0.5 mechanical pencil. This process, often presenting in itself in my silence and vacant expression – what some might call the zone – is marked by exhaustion and intensity, sometimes even bordering on despair.
My intentions with my artwork this past year have been to isolate my viewer – with my work displayed in the corner of a room and with the audio piece only listenable by the provided headphones, my viewer is forced to turn their back to the rest of the space around them and focus solely on what is in front of them. For this brief time, perhaps they are listening to a preacher or God Himself, and maybe they are just listening to themselves thinking, cornered into a spot of apathetic vacancy, loneliness and anticipatory grief.
