I’m Sophy, a video artist from Italy interested in exploring visual storytelling. At the moment, I am between Lisbon, Portugal, Treviso, Italy and Reading, UK. In my practice, I mix contrasting footage from different cameras and experiment with composition and editing. I’m particularly focused on the presence and role of light and how it can contribute to creating pleasing visuals. My favourite subjects are nature and everyday life. I find comfort in observing everyday elements, I implement the use of candid video and photo as much as I can. My inspiration comes from conversation, personal reflections or following visual leads, bringing me to explore abstract themes.
I started my journey to becoming an artist in 2021, graduating in Fine Art from a 5-year course at Liceo Artistico Statale di Treviso, Italy, focusing on learning traditional media such as drawing, painting, sculpture and building a strong foundation in Art History. I came to discover that my favourite aspect of art is its ability to reveal narratives, bringing me to start a BA in Art and Film and Television at the University of Reading.
This year, I had the opportunity to take part in an online exhibition called the Nature Created by Design at the Roski School of Art. I studied a summer semester abroad at Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea, where I studied Korean history, commodification and export culture, and an introduction to AI.
Through my work, I strive to invite the viewer to reflect, appreciate and become more aware of their surroundings and environment by highlighting and elevating elements of the everyday.
