My art is shaped by my desire to express my spirituality and the esoteric concepts that define it. This year’s focus: polarity within the process of creation. Polarity exists all around us, and is most commonly associated with the Yin and Yang symbol, which represents the balance of opposing forces that results from the ordering of chaos; the outer circle representing the chaotic undifferentiated state of the universe, which is then ordered and contained within the circle, represented by the Yin and Yang. I build upon this concept through the use of the religious concept of the Seven Days of Creation, explored through the lens of the sacred geometry symbol ‘The Seed of Life’. To capture the many forms that polarity exists in, I worked with materials that have multiple contrasting qualities in relation to each other: soft and rough texture, light and heavy weight, white and black tone, and light and dark illumination. And since it regards the concept of creation, I visually utilise the building blocks of our reality: light, wave, geometry, and platonic solids.
‘Polarity to Coalescence’ aims to capture the formation and the perpetual interaction of polar opposites, and the results of their unification. Thus, I start with the circular base, representing the ‘chaotic whole’: the first step within The Seed of Life. Emerging from it are the contrasting forms, attracting toward each other from opposing sides, and once they meet, they form the double-helix, spiralling and growing upward together, a dance of their relationship: the second step. This resulting in their connection and coalescence, which is represented by the triquetra; the third step, and a symbolism of the unification of opposing forces, which allows for the formation of the foundational colours of the light spectrum, and the first potential platonic solid: the Tetrahedron.
