My paintings explore simple lines and shapes within figurative self-portraiture. This has evolved through using emulsion paint to create confident simple lines when mark making and restricting my colour palette to red and blue to help define light and space establishing a more in-depth self-portrait.
Amy Silliman’s book ‘Faux Pa’ encouraged me to develop my own colour palette of red and blue. Fauvism inspired my colour placement of the contrast of red and blue, including lines and shapes. This simplification of a self- portrait intrigues me in how I can evoke emotion through colour instead of using a naturalistic palette. This application of paint has developed my style into a more illustrative portrayal as each line is simplified to its colour.
Crucially, large scale has been important in my self-portraiture, through using myself as a vessel to apply this colour palette too, and exploring light, shade and compositions. Overall through developing my artwork, I have grown in confidence with myself and painting.
