Art and Psychology

I create portrait paintings of women on a small, scaled range of canvases. Each portrait uses singular colours of acrylic paint, to create a monochromatic image and transfiguration of the painted females. Inspired by how the online engagement of perceived imagery impacts self-perception, self-comparison, and self-worth, I project these issues into the composition of each portrait. Where I often obscure the perceived portrait through a painted phone, by layering lines across the face and into the screen, or by using the digital frames to entrap the reoccurring portrait. I focus on showcasing the negative implications of the online world through these visual interpretations, by predominantly depicting the upper female form (head and shoulders), to conceal any ideologies of femininity that are often perpetuated within social media.

My work is inspired by artists such as Gerhard Ritcher, Lisa Brice, Antoine Geiger, Alison Katz, and art critic John Berger. Where their works encouraged the formation of the context, composition, and gestural mark makings within my work.
