My work this year has been inspired by poetry and songwriting in alignment with the concept of grief. Love and loss, acceptance and denial, one step forward, two steps back. These have been largely presented through the display of nature, and the skeletons present across my work. The cyclicality of birth, life and death present in nature has fascinated me for years, being present in my most frequented songs and poems. In opposition, the skeletons represent the in-between of this cycle, being ever-present yet not quite living or dead.
Each work has been created with acrylic paint, both flat on the canvas and sculpted to create a three dimensional aspect, such as the dangling leaves of the willow trees. Added texture and dimension encourages interaction, attracting more sensory exploration.
Exploring grief, through not only my own experiences, but the words of others from hundreds of years ago to this year, has helped the process feel less lonely. The shift in the universe is deeply present, but somehow the stars stay shining.
